According to the summary, Russian opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin appeared on Russia's NTV channel on May 27 and called to elect a new president in 2024 to restore normal relations with Europe.

According to British intelligence, Nadezhdin has been openly criticising the war since the beginning of the invasion, but it is likely to be the first call for Putin's replacement on state-run Russian television since it began.

"Over the past 15 months, Russia has imposed restrictions on freedom of speech not seen since Soviet times. However, there is a real possibility that recent scathing rhetoric by nationalist figures such as the owner of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is encouraging opposition figures to break the taboo," the British Defence Ministry said.
