An unexpected date for the counter-offensive has been announced.

Yesterday, the Kremlin media reported that Putin allegedly came to the occupied territories of Ukraine, where he visited the Russian troops in the Kherson region, and then went to the Luhansk region. However, the route of the Russian dictator raised many questions.

The BBC concluded that Putin did not visit military positions, but a recreation centre on the Arabat Spit, 150 kilometers from the front.

What is behind this trip and why is the Kremlin dictator copying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky? Charter97.org asked AFU Reserve Colonel Roman Svitan, a prominent military expert, about it.

– It looked like a real comedy. The initial purpose was to raise Putin's popularity, and also, as a response to approximately the same actions of Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky was coming to the front line in Bakhmut, Avdiivka, but Putin had to come so far, presenting it as the "front line". Although the big question is whether it was Putin himself.

I think that it was still one of his doubles. The fact is that Putin has very tight control over the health of those people with whom he communicates. They are quarantined for up to a week, and here we are talking about direct contacts. It casts doubt on Putin's personality in the video. Nevertheless, it does not matter whether it was Putin or his double. The message is important. It is most likely needed to highlight some action that will take place in the near future.

– What are you talking about?

– It is about an action or a statement. The fact is that the Russian media began to disperse questions related to the ending of the SMO (so-called Special Military Operation) recently. Prigozhin [the leader of Wagner PMC - Ed.] and some other Russian speakers were the initiators. I think that this is just the beginning of the “highlighting” of this statement.

That is, they are telling that Putin personally visited even the Kherson region or near and decided to end the so-called SMO. Allegedly, “everything is fine with us, we are moving on to a peaceful life”.

– Then, what will be the consequences of this announcement of suspension? After all, there is a so-called Party of War in Russia.

– Look, the entire Russian front and the army, based on the stages of the war, have to go on the defensive anyway now. They had an offensive phase in the winter and it ended. In winter, they tried to advance along the entire front line. They were completely halted at some nodes, somewhere they were thrown back, and somewhere they really passed (Bakhmut, Soledar). They are hunkered down now accumulating forces and war machinery for the next step. This is how war works: movement, stop, accumulation, and so on it goes, around the circle.

So that it does not look like they are exhausted and dead, they will highlight: “Here we have already completed our task and now we are moving to total defence. We will meet our 'enemy' on the new borders of Russia, recaptured over the past winter." This is the information agenda that will now be presented in the information field of Russia. It won't give any results.

Ukrainian troops will begin offensives. I think, even before May 6. Before the coronation of King Charles of England [Charles will use the throne name Charles III - Ed.]. We are to make a present for the British Crown.

So the Russians want to meet offensive actions on the defensive. This is logical from a military point of view. This is the development I see now.

– The Institute for the Study of War claims that Putin is already looking for those responsible for the failures at the front. Will the heads roll soon?

I don't think the heads will roll. Look, it did not happen before. The fact is that their sub bench is empty, there is no one there. There will be more rotations. Someone will be put forward, someone will be pushed back, as Surovikin used to be. This will not be done by Putin, but rather by the General Staff, based on its vision of further actions. There won't be any great purges.

The fact is that if you cut off the heads, then this will be evidence that Russia really lost. And this already does not look very interesting in terms of the information agenda.

I repeat, most likely there will be a rotation up to promotion. When a person needs to be removed, one is transferred to a higher position but somewhere in the Far East. Such an honourable exile, but it does not break the general concept.
