Lithuanian companies will not receive permits to import electricity from Belarus.

On Tuesday, the Lithuanian Parliament accepted in the second reading the proposal of President Gitanas Nauseda on how to prevent electricity generated by the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) in Astravets from entering Lithuania, Delfi informs.

88 members of the Seimas voted for introducing amendments to the Law on the necessary measures to protect against threats from unsafe nuclear power plants of third countries, while two parliamentarians - social workers Artūras Skardžius and Rimante Salaševičiūtė - abstained.

The amendments stipulate that enterprises will not receive permission to import electricity from Belarus. Moreover, if the government commission for checking transactions of strategic enterprises determines that the importer poses a threat to the security of the country, his license will be revoked.

Chief Advisor to the President Jaroslav Neverovich said that the synchronization of the energy systems of the Baltic countries with Europe and disconnection from the system of BRELL, where only Russia and Belarus would remain, would help to protect themselves from the Belarusian electricity.

The Seimas passed a law banning the purchase of electricity from unsafe power plants. In 2017, the Seimas recognized that BelNPP is unsafe and poses a threat to national security, the environment and public health of Lithuania.
