A Mysterious 7-hour Signal Was Detected In Space

Astronomers detected a powerful signal in deep space that lasted seven hours. This gamma-ray burst, designated GRB 250702B, broke previous records by lasting approximately 25,000 seconds, according to BBC Sky at Night Magazine.
It is noted that astronomers typically detect such events, accompanied by high-energy radiation, using space telescopes that observe vast sections of the sky. GRB 250702B was detected by NASA’s Fermi space telescope on July 2, 2025.
According to scientists, gamma-ray bursts usually result from the collapse of massive stars or the merger of neutron stars. However, researchers believe that the record-breaking duration of GRB 250702B points to a rare event—the merger of helium stars.
The merger of helium stars is a rare scenario in which a stellar-mass black hole is thought to swallow a collapsed helium star from the inside out. Extreme bursts are extremely difficult to detect with conventional telescopes, as they are generally fainter and harder to identify than short bursts.
The publication added that preparations are currently underway for the 2027 launch of the COSI telescope, which will help scientists detect and analyze more long-duration flares.
