Zelensky: I Told Abramovich That We Will Not Leave Donbass
Vladimir Zelensky

Ukrainian president confirms meeting with Russian oligarch.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has confirmed information that he met with Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in May. The Ukrainian leader shared some details of that meeting in an interview with Sky News.

"He came to Kiev. He said that I [brought] a message directly to you, and I want to take messages from you and give them to Putin," the Ukrainian president said.

According to Zelensky, Abramovich asked that the meeting remain secret because he did not want publicity.

The Ukrainian president explained that the Russians wanted to understand "what we are ready to do" when it comes to peace talks. Particularly on the Donbass issues.

"This was a key message. I said that we will not leave [Donbass]. We will not give you victory in this way," Zelensky said.

It should be noted that earlier the Financial Times reported that Abramovich met with Zelensky. According to the publication's sources, Zelensky asked Abramovich to inform Putin of his willingness to meet - for the first time since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The FT's sources noted that Ukraine thus wanted to demonstrate that it was serious about holding direct peace talks with Russia - even though the US, which had previously mediated, has now turned its attention to the situation in the Middle East.

Kiev hoped that a series of successful strikes on Russian territory, particularly on its oil refineries, and the halt to the Russian offensive achieved by the AFU would strengthen "the incentive for an immediate ceasefire."
