Israel is beginning peace talks with Lebanon, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in a statement released by his office on Facebook.
"In light of Lebanon's repeated calls for direct talks with Israel, I instructed the cabinet yesterday to begin direct talks with Lebanon as soon as possible," Netanyahu said.
He explained that the talks will focus on disarming Hezbollah and establishing peaceful relations between the two countries.
"Israel appreciates today's call by Lebanon's prime minister for the demilitarization of Beirut," the prime minister added.
U.S. President Donald Trump asked Netanyahu to reduce Israeli strikes on Lebanon to prevent disrupting the fragile truce with Iran, NBC News reported, citing a senior Trump administration official.
