The Information Minister said the regime is unable to implement the blockage.
The Belarusian authorities will not block the American video hosting YouTube, which in early April removed the channels of the republic's state media - BelTA, ONT and STV, said Information Minister Dmitry Zhuk. According to him, any ban should be "expedient and effective," while the consequences of such a decision should be "clearly thought out." "If we declare, but can't implement, it's better not to declare at all," said Zhuk.
The Minister also stressed that one should act "very carefully" with large foreign platforms, which are used by citizens of Belarus. He reminded that Alexander Lukashenko prefers "other mechanisms of relationship with the players of the world media space" to bans. According to Zhuk, the head of state is sure that there is an information war going on now, but he doesn't want it to "become hot." "Let it remain in the information sphere. We'll have to fight on foreign territory - in the same YouTube, Instagram," the minister said, adding that the authorities will protect the country "from the information invasion of negative trends, which are unnatural to the morals of Belarusians."
Zhuk became the head of the Ministry of Information on April 9. Previously, he headed the publishing house Belarus Today, founded by the presidential administration.
YouTube removed the channels of the Belarusian state media on April 3. They reported that the hosting owner - Google - referred to the sanctions, but did not provide any explanations. The republic's Ministry of Information called the blocking an "unfriendly and groundless step" and allowed retaliatory measures.
