The spy plane was flying with its transponder turned off.
The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command said Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 spy plane over the Baltic Sea on April 8, the command said in a statement to X.
The agency said that a pair of Air Force F-16 fighter jets carried out a successful interception, visual identification and escort from the area of responsibility of the Russian Il-20.
It is noted that the electronic reconnaissance plane carried out a reconnaissance mission in international airspace without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off. However, it did not violate Polish airspace.
The military explained that such actions - interception and escort - are standard practice, which is applied to aircraft that violate the rules.
"Thanks to the interception procedure, it is possible to immediately establish the nature of the flight, assess the potential threat and - if necessary - take corrective measures, such as changing course or directing the aircraft to land. These measures limit the risk of incidents and ensure the safety of both civil air traffic and critical infrastructure," the command explained.
