Hungary Secretly Offered Aid To Iran

While paying lip service to Israel.

Shortly after the deadly Israeli attack in September 2024, when thousands of Hezbollah militants' pagers exploded, the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban offered aid to Iran, a key sponsor of the group.

The The Washington Post (WP) newspaper reported this, citing copies of a transcript of a phone call offering aid.

On September 30, 2024, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó in a conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi said, "Our secret service has already contacted your services and we will share all the information we have gathered during the investigation."

Hungary was then in the spotlight because the Taiwanese company that owns the pager brand said they were manufactured in Hungary under a licensing agreement, WP points out.

Sijjarto, in a conversation with Araghchi, stressed that Hungary was not involved in the pager bombings, which killed 12 people and injured some 2,800 others. He also denied that the pagers were manufactured in Hungary.

According to the transcript, Szijjártó said in his conversation with Araghchi: "I just wanted to personally inform you that our services have already contacted yours."

When Araghchi replied that he was "very grateful to you for all this," Szijjártó pronounced: "Absolutely, absolutely."

"If you need more information or want to contact me, I am always at your service."

The publication also notes that the call contradicts Budapest's official policy of supporting Israel. Like U.S. President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu publicly backed Orban before the election.
