White House Names Red Lines In Talks With Iran

The ball is on Tehran's side.

US President Donald Trump will only negotiate with Iran if there is free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said, CNN reported.

"While the Strait of Hormuz remains open without restrictions or delays, these extremely sensitive and complex negotiations will take place behind closed doors over the next two weeks," she said.

Livitt said Iran has assured the White House that it is allowing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz despite reports of the waterway being closed. Privately, the U.S. has seen increased vessel traffic in the strait today, she added, stressing that any closure would be a "totally unacceptable" development for Washington.

Livitt also clarified that the U.S. would view Iran's charging of fees for crossing the Strait of Hormuz as a restriction.
