Ukrainian marines have carried out a unique operation, destroying a bridge with the help of drones for the first time in the history of wars: they used British Malloy T-150 logistics drones.
The Telegraph reports The Telegraph.
The mission, carried out by the 426th Marine Unmanned Systems Regiment, lasted two months. The bridge had previously been attempted to be destroyed by aircraft and HIMARS missiles, but the structure proved too strong for overhead strikes.
"Bridges are relatively easy to destroy from below. But they are designed in such a way that they are extremely strong from above," Colonel Alexei Bulakhov, the regiment's commander, explained to the publication.
The key role in the breakthrough was played by the occupants' indiscretion. The Ukrainian military discovered a photo of a Russian soldier under the bridge supports on the social network Instagram. This allowed engineers to study in detail the vulnerable places of the structure from below.
In the course of 60 days, Malloy T-150 drones made 30 sorties, delivering a total of 1.5 tons of explosives. The 50-kilogram shaped charges were lowered on cables precisely into the weak zones of the supports. After a series of explosions, the final missile strike finally collapsed the structure. Now the Russian Federation's logistics on the Dnieper islands depend on the boats, which are an easy target for the AFU.
Uniquely, the Malloy T-150 drone is not a combat system. This drone, developed by Malloy Aeronautics, was designed for primarily peaceful applications.
"Originally conceived by New Zealand-born inventor Chris Malloy as a flying motorcycle for grazing cattle in the Australian outback, it has evolved into a logistical drone carrying supplies to troops on the front lines," the publication writes.
Malloy T-150 was chosen for the mission because its electric motor has no heat signature and is very quiet, which allowed it to approach the bridge unnoticed at night. The drone itself has protection against REB (GPS jamming). But most importantly, it can lift up to 68 kg, which allowed the use of powerful charges.
