Russia And China Block UN Draft Resolution On The Strait Of Hormuz

The resolution was drafted by Bahrain.

The UN Security Council failed to pass a resolution to use force against Iran to unblock the Strait of Hormuz. Russia and China vetoed it, Bloomberg reports. Eleven members of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, with two more abstaining.

The resolution was prepared by Bahrain. The document stipulates the right of international forces to use "all necessary means" to ensure free navigation in the strait. On April 3, Russia, China and France had already blocked the draft resolution. The countries opposed the wording authorizing forceful measures.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for oil and gas supplies from the Persian Gulf. After the U.S.-Israeli military operation began on Feb. 28, Iran effectively blocked shipping in the strait. Tehran later allowed passage along the route to friendly countries including Russia, China and India. US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with consequences if it refuses to make a deal and unblock the Strait of Hormuz.
