The mission is returning to Earth.

The Artemis 2 mission astronauts on Monday traveled the maximum distance from Earth in the history of space exploration and flew over the far side of the moon, viewing its surface in detail, BBC reported.

"The Artemis 2 mission crew of NASA astronauts Reed Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen set a record for the distance from Earth , traveled on a manned mission, surpassing the Apollo 13 record set in 1970 (248,655 miles)," NASA said.

The Apollo 13 crew traveled 400,171 kilometers from Earth. "Artemis 2 broke that record by about 6,500 kilometers, reaching a maximum distance from Earth of 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers), NASA said.

After 22:00 GMT, Mission Control Center in Houston lost contact with the crew when the Orion spacecraft was behind the far side of the moon. That pause lasted exactly 40 minutes, as had been calculated.

First a radio signal returned to the engineers' monitors, then a large data packet, followed by Christina Koch's clear voice: "Houston, Integriti, communications check. It's so good to hear from Earth again."

At the time of the flyby over the far side, the craft was at its minimum distance from the moon's surface - 6,550 kilometers. From this distance, the astronauts could scrutinize this part of the lunar surface and take detailed photographs. They were also asked to make pencil drawings and audio recordings describing what they saw.

The astronauts now returned to Earth. On the way back, they also observed the solar eclipse and took photos and videos of it.
