Iran Says Explosions Near World's Largest Gas Field

They rang out near the petrochemical plant.

Several explosions were heard near a petrochemical plant in the South Pars field in southern Iran, Fars news agency reported.

"A few minutes ago, several explosions were heard from the South Pars petrochemical plant in Assaluyeh," the report said.

South Pars / North Dome is the world's largest natural gas (gas condensate) field located in the Persian Gulf. Its reserves are estimated at about 51 trillion cubic meters of gas and 50 billion barrels of gas condensate.

The total area of the field is about 9.7 thousand square kilometers, of which about 3.7 thousand square kilometers (South Pars area off the coast of Iran near the port of Assaluyeh) are in Iranian waters, and about 6 thousand square kilometers (North Dome / North Field area) - in the territorial waters of Qatar.
