Pyongyang has distanced itself from the ayatollahs' regime.
North Korea is likely seeking to distance itself from Iran despite the traditionally close relations between the countries. This is reported by CNN with reference to South Korean intelligence.
South Korea's National Intelligence Service believes that the DPRK has so far not supplied Iran with weapons or related materials, according to MP Pak Sung-won.
Other facts also testify to attempts to maintain distance. In particular, Pyongyang did not express condolences after the assassination of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, nor did it congratulate Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as the country's new leader.
According to Park Sung-won, this line of behavior may be an attempt to "secure a new diplomatic space" ahead of a possible summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Si Jinping, which is expected in May.
Another South Korean lawmaker, Lee Seongkwon, said the DPRK has also avoided directly criticizing Donald Trump ahead of the meeting.
