Trump Requested A Record $1.5 Trillion Military Budget

The requested budget is 40% more than the current budget.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has requested $1.5 trillion from Congress for defense in fiscal year 2027, the largest amount in the country's modern history, German Wave reports.

Trump attributes the sharp increase in spending to the ongoing war with Iran and the need to replenish spent weapons stocks. According to the president, the defense of the country is more important than social programs: he proposes to shift the financing of health care and preschool education to the states.

The main part of the amount - more than $1.1 trillion - is planned to be spent through the standard budget procedure, another $350 billion - through the mechanism of budget reconciliation. At the same time, the White House proposes to cut domestic spending by $73 billion: climate, housing and education programs will suffer. On the other hand, the security bloc will get a boost - the Justice Department's budget may grow by 13 percent, with additional funds allocated for border security and deportations.

Congress met the plan cautiously

The request has caused skepticism among lawmakers of both parties. The main complaint is that the US administration has effectively removed Congress from control of the war with Iran, which is now in its fifth week.

It is telling that parliamentarians have already rejected similar cuts in social spending when discussing the 2026 budget - the current proposals risk facing the same resistance. Analysts warn that implementing the plan would add tens of trillions of dollars to the national debt over a decade. The full text of the budget request has not yet been released.

For three weeks of airstrikes on Iran, the US and Israel have taken out the Iranian navy and air defense system, destroying dozens of planes and missile launchers. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and key figures in the security apparatus were killed on the first day of the attacks.
