The Lithuanian President Has Set A Clear Condition To Lukashenko
Gitanas Nauseda

An ultimatum from Vilnius.

Dialogue between Lithuania and Belarus is possible if Minsk shows goodwill, said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. He explained that for at least a month migrants and contraband balls should not enter the neighboring country from our country, writes Delfi. However, on the same day Lithuanian border guards recorded a record number of migrants trying to cross the border from Belarus since the beginning of the year.

Nauseda responded with a question when asked about talks on Lithuania's possible dialogue with Minsk.

"And with a record flow of illegal migrants on our border in recent days or constant balloon attacks, do we really have to talk now and ask the neighboring regime for an indulgence for a meeting?" - The politician told TV3 on April 1.

He commented on the call for Lithuania to hold a bilateral political meeting with Belarus and restore the transit of fertilizers, voiced by the U.S. special envoy to Belarus John Cole.

Nauseda said Lithuania should put forward a condition to Belarus for a possible dialogue. According to him, if Minsk shows good will, for example, stopping the flow of smuggling balloons into Lithuania and migrants trying to cross the border, then political negotiations between the states could be considered.

"On the contrary, I would say that we should very specifically state that if in the next few weeks, within four weeks, there are no balloons, there are no illegal migrants, all the trucks will safely return to Lithuania and there will be a real demonstration of the regime's efforts to normalize relations, at least without the illegal migrants. Therefore, according to Nauseda, Lithuania should be united with the EU on this issue and not make decisions on its own.

Nauseda noted that if Minsk shows a desire for change and rapprochement with the West, discussions may be initiated on the need to extend the sanctions imposed on our country.

"These 12 months (the term of the sanctions. - Note.Sooner or later they will pass, during this time there may be other positive shifts, and the regime has endless opportunities to show that they really want to get closer to the West, that they want to stop being Russia's puppet in the war with Ukraine - I realize that today such an assumption seems unrealistic, but they have the opportunity to demonstrate it - and then we will undoubtedly be the ones who will say, without ignoring the fact, even speaking at the forums of the European Union, that "look, the situation in Belarus is changing, and we can correspond to it".
