It involves bringing earth-moving machines and hundreds of troops into the country.
The U.S. Army's military command has presented President Donald Trump with a plan to seize and export about 450 kilograms of highly enriched uranium from Iran, The Washington Post reported, citing two sources. It is specified that the plan involves airlifting earth-moving equipment to Iran and building a runway for cargo planes to carry the radioactive material outside the Islamic Republic.
According to the publication, the plan was presented to Trump last week, following his request. The Wall Street Journal had earlier reported that the Trump administration was mulling a similar plan.
The risks of a possible US operation to seize uranium in Iran
It would be a high-risk special operation. Experts cited by WP estimate that a task of comparable complexity has never before been undertaken in time of war. "The mission may require airlifting hundreds or thousands of troops and heavy equipment to support excavation and extraction of radioactive materials," the authors explain. Such work could take weeks and would take place under fire deep inside Iranian territory, according to former U.S. Defense Department officials with whom the journalists spoke.
The 15-point plan handed to Iran by the U.S. administration to end the war includes, among other things, a demand that Tehran give up highly enriched uranium. Iran rejects this demand, but even before the war began, the Islamic Republic's authorities expressed their willingness to downgrade uranium enrichment, WP recalls.
In a written comment on the plan for the US military to seize Iranian uranium, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt emphasized: "The Pentagon's job is to make preparations to give the commander in chief as many options as possible. It does not mean the president has made a decision."
Where Iran's uranium stockpiles are stored
Trump himself and U.S. Defense Department chief Pete Hegseth have repeatedly said that the goal of the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran is to prevent the Islamic Republic from developing nuclear weapons. According to the IAEA, Iran has about 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to a level of 60%. This is on the verge of the level of enrichment needed to build a nuclear weapon.
As reported by the agency's head Rafael Grossi, more than half of this uranium stockpile is stored at a nuclear facility near the central Iranian historic city of Isfahan, in tunnels more than 90 meters underground. The rest of the uranium is located in the city of Natanz and other sites.
