Estonia Detained 16 Accomplices Of Russian Special Services

Most of these people worked for the FSB.

In Estonia since the beginning of 2025, a record number of 16 people have been detained as accomplices of Russian special services. This was announced by the head of the country's Security Police Margo Palloson, speaking at the presentation of his agency's annual report in Tallinn, reports DW.

According to him, most of these people worked for the FSB, some were agents of the Russian military intelligence service, formerly known as GRU. Two had Russian citizenship, two had Estonian citizenship, and as many had dual citizenship of Estonia and the Russian Federation. In addition, among the detainees were persons with citizenship of Israel, Moldova and Ukraine. The vast majority of the detainees did not have access to sensitive information or state institutions.

"The activities of all 16 Russian agents can be said to have been stopped at a relatively early stage. They did not have time to cause significant damage to Estonia's security," Palloson emphasized. He said that the relatively high number of detainees "does not indicate an increase in the threat level, but reflects the preventive work of internal security."

The head of the Estonian Security Police also pointed out that the sanctions imposed against Russia have reduced its capacity for hostile activities, including propaganda, and much of that activity has moved to social media. "In the past year, we have repeatedly seen how Estonia's internal world has been undermined through social networks - simply and cheaply," Palloson stated, citing as an example the recent anonymous channels on social networks calling for the secession of Narva, a city on the border with Russia, from Estonia.
