The Queen has spoken unflatteringly of Prime Minister Cameron, who decided to hold such a referendum.
Britain's Queen was an opponent of the country's exit from the European Union and even told US President Barack Obama about it. The former president told this to American journalist Susan Page for the book "The Queen and Her Presidents: the Hidden Hand That Made History".
According to Obama, the conversation about "Brexit" happened during his visit to the UK in April 2016. The queen said that such an important issue as Britain's exit from the EU "should not have been decided by plebiscite," and spoke unflatteringly of Prime Minister David Cameron, who decided to hold such a referendum.
"It is hard to understand how a prime minister who supposedly understands something about politics can put such an important issue to a referendum whose outcome he does not know," the former White House chief quoted the queen as saying.
The Times reminds in this regard that the ruling monarch, who at the time was Elizabeth II, according to the existing rules can not publicly express their personal opinion on political and public issues. The queen's attitude to "Brexit" was a topic of endless speculation at the time. The newspaper also quotes Ms. Page as noting that even the conversation over lunch at Windsor was "an extremely rare occasion when the Queen criticized the Prime Minister - publicly or privately."
David Cameron first talked about the referendum on Britain's EU membership in 2013. The referendum was held on June 23, 2016. 51% of the voters who took part were in favor of the country's exit from the EU.
