"Magyar Made An Interesting Statement."
Petro Oleshchuk

What does the victory of pro-European forces in Hungary mean for Ukraine?

In the parliamentary elections in Hungary, the Tisza party of Peter Magyar is winning, which has already been congratulated by European colleagues. It is expected to get 138 seats in parliament, while Viktor Orban's Fidesz party will win 55 seats.

What does this mean for Ukraine? Charter97.org spoke to Ukrainian political scientist and professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Peter Oleshchuk about this:

- For Ukraine, it means that there is a high chance of finally unblocking the next package of sanctions against Russia, as well as a 90 billion euro loan from the EU, which was previously blocked by Orban.

There is still not quite clear, but the prospect of resetting relations with Hungary. If Hungary was until recently practically the most hostile country in the European Union towards Ukraine, now there are chances to correct the situation somewhat.

Everybody realizes that it will not be easy. In any case, the influence of the past will remain, but Ukraine has every chance to move to a normal constructive dialog, which, in fact, was expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga in his statement. Many of the EU representatives have already assessed this situation as the basis for Hungary's full return to the European family, stabilization of the situation in Europe, and generally the elimination of internal contradictions within the European Union.

From some additional points: Magyar made an interesting statement that he plans to reboot relations within the Visegrad Group. To flesh out that group again. As I understand it, Magyar said that his first visits will be to Poland and to Austria. He first of all expects to restore relations with the European Union, to unblock all the funds that were frozen because of Orban's position, and secondly to reset relations with Hungary's immediate neighbors and thus restore Hungary's presence in all relevant institutions.

I would like to emphasize that what is happening in Hungary is definitely a defeat for the Kremlin, given the resources they poured into Orban's regime, how they tried to invest in natural resources, money, and anything else. But it's also a defeat for Donald Trump, who directly supported Orban, directed his team's politicians to him, and personally spoke out on this issue on numerous occasions. This is quite a blow to Trump's reputation in the context of how he is listened to in today's world.

All indications are that it was Trump's active support that may have played more of a negative role for Orban than a positive one. Apparently, Trump is not well-liked in the modern world right now. But the fact is that the visit of J.D.Vance immediately led to a serious drop in Orban's rating and mobilization of the anti-Orban electorate.

That is, perhaps, the fact that Magyar and Tisa did not just win, but defeated defeated defeatedly, can be attributed to Trump's support for Orban.
