Lithuania Strengthens Air Defense With NASAMS System

The new battery will increase defense against drones and missiles.

The Lithuanian Air Force has begun receiving components of Norway's NASAMS medium-range air defense system, LRT reports.

Parts of the NASAMS system began arriving in Lithuania late last week. The military received missile launchers, fire control centers, radars and other equipment. This will be used to form a new air defense battery that will "significantly strengthen the currently available air defense forces of this type."

NASAMS is a medium-range air defense system manufactured in Norway and capable of destroying planes, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles at a distance of several dozen kilometers.

Lithuania began using the weapon in 2020. The country ordered a second NASAMS battery back in 2023, and its full integration is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

"The new NASAMS battery will allow for more effective surveillance and airspace protection, increase the speed of response and provide wider coverage of the protected territory," the Lithuanian Armed Forces said.
