Trump's words are reminiscent of the casino atmosphere in Las Vegas.
When US President Donald Trump and his inner circle call something "final" or "best offer," it often resembles the atmosphere of a Las Vegas casino: "your last chance to double your bet" - before the dealer shuffles the deck again. NDTV writes about this.
"Such language should sound strong, even as something irreversible. But those who have watched his talks for years are accustomed to treating them with caution," the publication notes.
So on Sunday, after talks in Islamabad failed to produce an agreement with Iran, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance used this language when speaking on Trump's behalf.
"The United States and Iran have failed to agree on an end to the war in the Middle East. At the same time, there was no immediate resumption of hostilities, and there was still hope in the region that the fragile truce would hold," the piece said.
It is noted that the meeting was the highest-level talks between the parties since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. Therefore, the question arises again: if Trump or his administration calls the proposal "final and best," is it really so?"
"We are leaving these talks with a very simple proposal, an approach based on mutual understanding, which is our final and best proposal. We'll see if the Iranians accept it," Vance said.
He also contacted Trump by phone about a dozen times during the talks. At the same time, the American leader instructed the participants in the dialog to "come in good faith and work hard to reach an agreement."
"Many media outlets reported that Trump supported or endorsed the proposal. However, none of his direct quotes included the words 'final offer' or 'best offer' Separately, he told reporters that the agreement 'changes nothing' for the United States because 'we have completely defeated this country,'" the publication emphasized."
The publication also recalls that Trump has used similar formulations before - in negotiations with North Korea, China, as well as repeatedly in the context of Ukraine.
So, on April 22, 2025, the US proposal presented to Ukrainian officials in Paris explicitly stated that it was the "final offer" of the American president.
