Hungarian Elections: Orban Loses By A Landslide

(Updated) The opposition Tisa may get a constitutional majority.

Hungary's national election office published the first results of voting in the country's parliamentary elections.

After processing 45.71 percent of the data, opposition leader Peter Magyar's Tisza party is in the lead, which could win 138 seats in the 199-seat parliament.

Second place goes to Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party, which has 54 seats, according to preliminary information.

Tisza could thus gain a constitutional majority in Hungary's parliament.

In addition, the far-right Our Fatherland could claim seven seats.

Hungary has a complicated system for counting electoral votes. The majority of deputies - 106 out of 199 - are elected in single-member districts by a relative majority.

An additional 93 seats are distributed among parties that pass the five-percent electoral threshold. At the same time, these mandates are distributed not proportionally, but taking into account a rather complicated system of compensatory votes.
