UK Postpones Plan To Hand Over Chagos Islands To Mauritius

After the U.S. failed to officially confirm its approval.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has postponed an agreement to give Mauritius the Chagos archipelago, home to a joint British-U.S. military base.

This is reported by BBC.

It was noted that this came after the U.S. failed to formally confirm its approval.

British officials said they were not completely abandoning the agreement, but they had a deadline to pass legislation before the session ends in the coming weeks.

The Chagos bill is not expected to be introduced in the king's speech in mid-May during the opening of the next session.

A British government spokesman said Diego Garcia is a key strategic military asset for both Britain and the United States.

"Ensuring long-term operational security is and will remain our priority - it is the main reason for the agreement. We continue to believe the agreement is the best way to protect the long-term future of the base, but we have always said we will only extend the agreement if the US supports it. We continue to work with the US and Mauritius," he emphasized.

The Chagos Islands, officially known as a British territory in the Indian Ocean, have been controlled by Britain since the early 19th century.

The agreement stipulates that Britain will cede sovereignty over the territory to Mauritius and pay an average of $136 million a year to rent a joint British-US military base on Diego Garcia Island.

Reminder, US President Donald Trump in January already criticized Britain for entering into an agreement to sell Diego Garcia island in the Indian Ocean, part of the Chagos archipelago, to the island nation of Mauritius last year. He used this as another reason why the US should own Greenland.
