The goal is to reinforce the fence that has already been built.
Construction of a special barrier has begun on the Polish-Belarusian border, the purpose of which is to reinforce the fence that has already been built.
This is reported by RMF24.
Polish Radio has learned that the fence in question is a four-meter mesh fence along a technical road topped with barbed wire, as well as additional coils of wire and a two-meter fence on the forest side, which is supposed to protect animals from injuries.
The commandant of the Podlasie border guard department, General Slawomir Klekotka, noted that the construction of the fence started simultaneously in five places, and every day the fence is gradually lengthened. The materials were purchased by the Border Guard Service, and the work is being done by military engineers.
"We started with the most critical places for us. We identified them taking into account possible attempts to illegally cross the border by people trying to enter our country illegally," he said.
The commandant said the new infrastructure should slow down attempts to illegally cross the border by migrants.
"This will give us time to react. There will be much more chances to detain these people and deprive them of their tools, because everything will take place entirely on Polish territory," he added.
The fence is planned to be erected along the entire 186-kilometer section of the border in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. The construction is scheduled for completion by the end of spring.
Beginning of the month, Poland extended for another three months the decision on the "buffer zone" on the border with Belarus, established for enhanced security control.
And the Polish Interior Ministry reported a nearly 96% reduction in the number of attempts to illegally cross the border with Belarus.
Poland previously built a 5-meter fence with surveillance equipment on the border with Belarus to more effectively stop illegal migrants. Construction began shortly after the emergence of this route with the assistance of the Belarusian authorities in the summer of 2021.
