Media: Representatives Of High-ranking Russian Command Were On Board The Crashed An-26

Russia has lost two warplanes in Crimea in 24 hours.

Russia loses its second military aircraft in a day: following the Su-34 an An-26 with dozens of military personnel on board crashed in Crimea.

This was reported by "Dialog.UA" with reference to Russian media citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

Communication with the military transport plane was lost during a routine flight over the peninsula. Search and rescue services later found the crash site.

"A search and rescue team has found the crash site of the An-26 airplane. According to a report from the site, six crew members and 23 passengers on board were killed," Interfax reported, citing an official statement.

The plane was carrying out a mission to transport personnel. The Russian Defense Ministry said there were no signs of external impact on the board. The preliminary cause of the crash is called a technical malfunction. A commission is working on the site.

Sources say that representatives of high-ranking officers of the Russian army could be on board the An-26. The names and ranks, according to them, may be made public soon.

An-26 is actively used for military and supply transportation, so such losses directly affect the logistics of the army. This is not the first episode in the last 24 hours.

Reports about the loss of a Su-34 fighter-bomber were confirmed earlier. At the same time, alternative versions of what happened are emerging.

Military observer and journalist Ivan Yakovina said in his YouTube channel that the operation could have involved F-16 fighters of the Ukrainian Air Force with the support of Saab 340 radar surveillance aircraft.

It is a radar detection and control platform capable of providing target designation and coordination of aviation in the air.

Sweden announced the transfer of two such aircraft to Ukraine in May 2024 as part of a package of military aid worth about $1.25 billion. It was noted then that the training of personnel and infrastructure will take about a year.

In the past, there were reports on the presence of such aircraft in the skies of Ukraine. At the same time, there is no official confirmation of the version about the An-26 and Su-34 combat defeat at the moment.
