There are several options.
US and Israeli authorities have discussed the possibility of sending special forces units to Iran "at a later stage of the war" to "seize stockpiles of highly enriched uranium" and other nuclear fuel. This was reported by Axios on Sunday, March 8, citing four sources. It is not yet clear whether such a mission would be American, Israeli or joint.
"It is likely to happen only after both countries are convinced that the Iranian military can no longer pose a serious threat to participating forces," the publication said.
In addition, Washington is considering the option of using special forces to seize Iran's Kharq Island in the Persian Gulf, U.S. administration officials told Axios on condition of anonymity. The island hosts a strategically important oil terminal, through which Iran carries out about 90% of its oil exports.
According to Axios, on March 3, at a congressional briefing, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was asked whether it was possible to seize Iranian nuclear materials.
"Somebody would have to go and get it," the State Department head replied at the time, without specifying who exactly could carry out such a mission.
In turn, a spokesman for the Israeli Defense Ministry said that the US administration is seriously considering the possibility of "sending special operations units to Iran to carry out specific tasks."
