Ales Bialiatski: Sanctions Cannot Be Weakened

The former political prisoner appealed to the EU and the UK.

Nobel laureate and former prisoner of conscience Ales Bialiatski said in an interview with The Times that it was sanctions that pushed the Belarusian authorities to gradually release political prisoners. According to him, EU countries and the UK should not ease restrictions.

"Without political and economic sanctions, we would have remained in prison. Only the sharp deterioration of the economic situation in Belarus in recent months forced the authorities to look for a way out," said the human rights activist.

Beliatski emphasized that the weakening of sanctions, as it happened on the part of the U.S. during the talks with Lukashenko, should not be repeated, since it was the restrictions that "created the necessary leverage for negotiations on the release of people."
