The security situation has changed.
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said the security situation in Finland and Europe has "fundamentally and significantly changed" since the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In 2023, Finland, which borders Russia, abandoned years of military neutrality and joined NATO, reports Military Forces.
According to a 1987 Finnish law, the import, production, storage and detonation of nuclear charges on Finnish territory is prohibited - even in times of war.
But now the government has put forward a proposal to change that law, making it possible to "import nuclear weapons into Finland, as well as to transport, deliver or store them in the country if this is related to the military defense of Finland."
