Military experts identified the type from periscope footage - the Los Angeles-class subs use a classic optical periscope through which the operator directly observes the target, while the newer Virginia uses masts with digital cameras and displays inside the central station.
The submarine in question is most likely involved in escorting the US carrier strike group USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) relatively nearby off the coast of Oman.
