In Sweden, the police conducted searches at Kubal. It is an aluminum smelter in the town of Sundsvall. It is controlled by the Russian aluminum company Rusal, founded by Oleg Deripaska. Two top managers of the company have been detained on suspicion of gross violation of sanctions, SVT reported. They are in "reasonable suspicion" status. It means that investigators have facts that point to possible involvement in a crime, but they are not yet enough to bring charges.
In Swedish law, sanctions violations are criminalized and can result in fines or imprisonment if large sums or dual-use goods are involved. Kubal's deputy CEO Jonas Eriksson confirmed that the company was under investigation. "We are cooperating with the authorities and providing the requested information," Eriksson told SVT in a commentary.
The investigation is being led by the Swedish prosecutor's office. "It is about suspected involvement in crimes that could harm the security of Sweden and Europe," said prosecutor Sara Nilsson. According to her, the investigation is in its early stages and is complex but extensive.
The Swedish Center Party had earlier demanded the nationalization of the Kubal aluminum smelter, SVT reported. Rusal's international press service responded to the idea of nationalization by telling the publication that the company hopes for a "balanced and reasonable approach from the EU authorities."
