NYT: Putin Was Ready To Fire Dmitriev And Start Peace Talks
Kirill Dmitriev

It was Iran that changed everything.

On the eve of the war in Iran, Vladimir Putin was ready to start negotiations on peace in Ukraine because of problems in the Russian economy. This is what emigrated Russian writer and journalist Mikhail Zygar writes in a column for The New York Times.

Rising interest rates, falling oil prices and the impact of international sanctions almost led him to this decision, Zygar argues. According to sources, the Kremlin chief used to ignore the team's complaints about the declining economy, but something changed in February 2026.

He saw the crisis and even, according to the journalist, there were signs that he was changing his mind about negotiations with Ukraine. But on February 28, the US and Israel launched a military operation in Iran, and "in one fell swoop" conditions changed, the author of the article notes.

In February, Putin seemed ready to change his negotiating team, and his special envoy Kirill Dmitriev was on the verge of being fired, Zygar claims. The main candidate to replace him was Rosneft chief Igor Sechin.

The assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, the rise in oil prices above $100 a barrel, and the suspension of part of the sanctions on Russian exports suddenly spared Moscow from economic problems, sources said.

The disagreement between the United States and its NATO allies, who have refused to send ships into the Strait of Hormuz, has only benefited Putin. Equally important, America's attention is focused on the Middle East, not Ukraine, and that's where attention and weapons that could help Ukraine are being diverted, Zygar said
