At Night, An Explosion Occurred In Lithuania Near The Border With Belarus

A drone that crossed the border is believed to have fallen.

There was an explosion at night in the Varena district of Lithuania. According to preliminary data, an unknown flying object, probably a drone, may have fallen there, LRT reports.

The incident occurred around 3:04 a.m. near the village of Lavisos, not far from the lake of the same name. In the video, which appeared in the media, the sound of an object flying can be heard, followed by an explosion a few seconds later. A flash of fire can be seen in the sky, followed by burning debris falling.

According to the Lithuanian military, the object may have crossed the state border before falling. Exactly what it was has not yet been determined.

Police, rescue services and other specialists are working at the scene. An air force helicopter has also been sent there for aerial surveillance. Authorities have activated a special response plan.

Witnesses report seeing debris on the lake ice that may belong to the fallen object. Officials confirm that the circumstances of the incident are being investigated and promise to provide more details later.
