Politico: Trump And Xi Meeting Postponed Until After The War With Iran Ends

US-China summit postponed indefinitely.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is telling foreign officials and others that it will not set a new date for a summit between the White House chief and Chinese leader Si Jinping until the conflict with Iran is over.

This is according to Politico.

A diplomat in Washington familiar with the plans for the US-China summit confirmed that the administration has made it clear: "The next dates for the Trump-Xi summit will only be proposed after the active phase of the conflict with Iran is over."

A Washington source close to the administration and also privy to the White House's plans for the summit confirmed that the administration is sticking to that intention.

At the same time, the White House denied that the summit dates are related to the war in Iran.

"This is fake news. The United States and China are in productive negotiations to reschedule President Trump's visit - announcements will be made shortly," said White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly.

The long-awaited meeting between Trump and Xi was originally scheduled for late March, but Trump previously announced that the meeting would be postponed "about a month" because "we have a war going on."

On Thursday, he said it would take place "in about a month and a half."

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt suggested the meeting might not take place until May.

As the war with Iran enters its fourth week, the US administration appears to be preparing for a longer conflict. The US has drawn up detailed plans to deploy ground troops on Iranian territory, the publication noted.

"There are operational constraints to waging war from another country - especially one as hostile as China. It would be terribly uncomfortable for Trump and Xi to negotiate in such an environment," a source close to the U.S. administration told the publication.
