Tehran has voiced even worse threats in response.
Tehran responded to U.S. threats to destroy Iran's power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not unblocked within two days. The retaliatory threats have been more extensive.
The Al Jazeera and Wall Street Journal reported.
Iran's military responded that if its fuel and energy complex is hit, the U.S. energy, information technology and desalination infrastructure in the region will be hit.
WSJ writes that while oil and gas reserves support the region's economy, millions of people in the Middle East rely on desalination plants for drinking water. The Middle East is home to more than 40 percent of the world's desalination capacity, or about 5,000 plants.
