Did Trump make an unfortunate joke about Pearl Harbor?
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the country is ready to allow Japan-linked ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement came after consultations between the countries' officials, Bloomberg citing Araghchi's interview with Japan's Kyodo News.
It is known that Japan is heavily dependent on the Middle East for oil imports. The war in Iran forced the Asian country to start using oil from reserves this month.
At the same time, according to press reports, Japan is under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding security in the strait.
In a face-to-face meeting with Trump earlier this week in Washington, Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi explained to him the legal restrictions on Japan's participation in such activities. She emphasized areas where the two sides had reached agreement, such as a commitment to import more oil from the United States and to cooperate on missile development, the media outlet said.
Trump also authored an inappropriate joke during his meeting with Takaichi, unacceptable at the highest diplomatic level. Asked by a Japanese journalist why Washington had not informed its allies of its plans to attack Iran, Trump counter-questioned why the Japanese had not warned him about Pearl Harbor.
