The Pentagon Has Begun Active Preparations For The Deployment Of Ground Troops To Iran

Trump is considering several options for utilizing the U.S. Marines.

The U.S. Department of War has begun active preparations for the possible deployment of U.S. ground troops in Iran. This was reported by CBS, citing multiple sources familiar with the discussions. According to the channel's interlocutors, senior military officials have already made specific requests related to preparations for such a scenario as President Donald Trump considers such steps in the war against Iran.

As part of the preparations, the US military has held meetings on the detention of Iranian soldiers and paramilitary fighters, including determining where the captives would be sent, among other things. The Army Rapid Reaction Force and expeditionary units of the US Marine Corps are involved in the planning.

At the same time, Trump himself, responding to a question from reporters on Thursday, March 19, initially said he was not going to conduct a ground operation in Iran, but immediately added: "If I did, I certainly wouldn't tell you that."

With this background, the US is building up its military presence in the Middle East. Three warships and about 2,200 Marines from an expeditionary unit left California earlier this week, according to two U.S. officials. This is the second such unit sent to the region since the war began, CBS noted.

As knowledgeable sources previously told Reuters, Trump is considering several options for using U.S. Marines in Iran: ensuring safe passage of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz while taking positions on the Iranian coast, seizing Kharq Island (a key center for Iranian oil exports), and an operation to seize highly enriched uranium reserves.

The White House, in a conversation with the agency, emphasized that a decision on the deployment of ground troops has not yet been made, but the president is "wisely considering all options." In total, the U.S. group in the Middle East currently has about 50,000 military personnel.
