The morbidity figures have caused panic in the government.
The growing number of people with diabetes in Russia may lead to the disease becoming an epidemic, Vice Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova announced at an expanded meeting of the Rospotrebnadzor board. Last year's morbidity figures are a cause for serious concern. "The disease threatens to turn into an epidemic. And the indicators that we are now recording for the results of 2025, they cause us serious concern," said Deputy Prime Minister (words are transmitted by "RIA Novosti").
Over 6 million Russians already have an established diagnosis, about the same number may suffer from latent forms of the disease. Deputy Health Minister Evgeny Kamkin confirmed that a significant proportion of cases remain undiagnosed.
Million patients in Russia need modern sugar-lowering drugs. However, as stated by the director of the Diabetes Institute of the I. I. Dedov Endocrinology Research Center. I. I. Dedov Marina Shestakova, the Russian Federation lacks sufficient funding to provide drugs for such a large number of patients.
In the budget of the Russian Federation for 2026, the funding of the program to combat diabetes was reduced by 13% (8.4 billion rubles against 9.6 billion in 2025). Specialists already propose to focus support measures on certain groups of patients.
In particular, the possibility of priority provision of discounted drugs to people of working age, whose treatment at the expense of the state is considered economically feasible, is being considered.
