A devastating blow has been dealt to the power wing of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The Mexican Navy has dealt a devastating blow to the power wing of the Sinaloa cartel.
The Bloomberg reports.
The Marine operation was a response to a daring attack by militants from a prearranged fortress building. The force not only eliminated the assault squad, but also seized an arsenal of high-powered firearms and advanced tactical equipment.
Daughter of drug lord at the epicenter of the battle
The biggest surprise during the sweep of the facilities was the presence of the daughter of "El Mayo" Zambada himself. Despite the fact that she was in one of the rooms where the militants were hiding, the Navy command made an unorthodox decision:
Release: Due to the lack of direct evidence of her involvement in criminal activity, the woman was handed over to family members.
Detention: At the same time, another powerful member of the organization was captured alive in the same place and is now testifying.
The battle for billions and security for the 2026 World Cup
This debacle came at a critical time for Mexico. The country is preparing to host World Cup matches in June, and the safety of millions of tourists has been jeopardized by the cartels' internal wars.
President Claudia Sheinbaum promised to curb the violence, but the situation has only escalated since Zambada's arrest in 2024. The Los Mayos faction is struggling to hold on to influence while their ringleader agrees to forfeit $15 billion in drug trafficking proceeds as part of a deal with the U.S. investigation.
Mexico's security forces are on maximum alert. In addition to defeating Los Mayos, the military recently eliminated the leader of the New Generation Jalisco cartel, triggering a new wave of retaliation.
The authorities have already deployed an additional 1,600 troops to Sinaloa to prevent full-scale chaos in the streets before the start of the Mundial.
