The name was chosen in honor of the movement led by General Charles de Gaulle.

The future French aircraft carrier, which is planned to be built by 2038, will be named France libre ("Free France" - Note). This was announced by President Emmanuel Macron during a visit to the construction site of Naval Group.

He emphasized that the name was chosen in honor of the movement "Free France", which was headed by General Charles de Gaulle. The movement appeared in June 1940. The participants of the movement fought for the liberation of France from Nazi Germany. Thus Macron decided to pay tribute to the "French spirit of resistance".

"This name encapsulates the memory of women and men who resisted barbarism, united to save the homeland, determined to defend a certain idea of our nation, our fellow liberators," said the French leader (quoted by Le Monde).

In December 2025, Macron announced the construction of a new aircraft carrier to strengthen France's position as a maritime power. The ship will be commissioned by 2038, replacing the current aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

The aircraft carrier will be 310 meters long with a displacement of 80,000 tons. It will be equipped with two nuclear reactors, and its tonnage will be 1.8 times larger than that of the "Charles de Gaulle". The French authorities plan to spend almost €10 billion on the ship construction program.
