The Russian dictator was spooked by US and Israeli surveillance before Khamenei's elimination.
Vladimir Putin has stopped appearing at public events in the Kremlin after details of the US and Israeli operation to eliminate Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei became known. As the Financial Times found out earlier, before the attack, Israeli security services tracked Khamenei's movements with the help of hacked surveillance cameras.
According to "Agency" calculations based on publications on Kremlin.ru, the last time Putin held a public event in the Kremlin on March 9 was a meeting on the situation on the global oil and gas market. After that, according to the presidential press service, he met several times with governors, the education minister and the head of Sberbank, and participated in meetings with the Security Council via video link. However, as the "Agency" points out, such meetings are often recorded in advance, and participation via video link is possible from different residences with identical offices.
The pause in in-person Kremlin events has now lasted nine days - one of the longest breaks since the beginning of the year. The only time Putin was absent from the Kremlin longer in 2026 was in February, from the 6th to the 18th. By comparison, the pause after the New Year's holidays did not exceed six days.
According to the Financial Times, Israeli intelligence services tracked the ayatollah through hacked street cameras in Tehran, images from which had been transmitted to Israel for years. One of the cameras was installed on Pasteur Street, where the government buildings are located, allowing them to study the compound's security system. "We knew Tehran as well as Jerusalem," the FT intelligence source noted. In addition, before the strike, Israel took out cell phone towers to prevent calls from going through to Khamenei's security phones.
In Moscow, where the number of surveillance cameras exceeds Tehran's and mobile internet blackouts in the center have lasted almost two weeks, these details caused alarm. Former "DNR state security minister" Andrey Pinchuk suggested in a post on the propaganda website Tsargrad that the "relentless hunt" for Iranian leaders and the mass blackouts in Moscow could be linked.
In the meantime, according to The Wall Street Journal, Israel has now staked its claim on destabilizing the Iranian regime from within, gaining intelligence from locals and eliminating security commanders. On the night of Tuesday, March 17, Iranian Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani, considered the de facto leader of the country after Khamenei's death, was eliminated. According to Iran International, Larijani's assassination was made possible by information from the Tehranis. The Israeli Defense Ministry also reported the "elimination" of Iranian Intelligence Minister Ismail Khatib, and in total, according to Tel Aviv, thousands of Iranian security officials were killed in the strikes.
