Because of the war in Iran.
Democrats in the U.S. Senate are preparing to use the tactic of forced and recurring votes on resolutions on President Donald Trump's war powers to take military action against Iran, a move that could effectively paralyze the upper chamber of Congress. This is reported by Time.
"We're hoping that through these votes we can get some accountability. We need to make it clear to the administration that we're going to continue to push for this even if they don't want us to, and that we're willing to use whatever tools, tactics and means we have as the minority party to get it done," said Democratic Senator Adam Schiff of California.
The strategy the minority plans to pursue is not only aimed at blocking the Republicans' agenda, but also at forcing the administration to admit responsibility for military action inside Iran. Schiff pointed out that not only has the administration given conflicting explanations for the war's objectives, but it has not defended them under oath. "For an administration that likes to call itself the most transparent in history, they are hiding from any responsibility for this war," the senator said.
The Democrats' tactics, Time noted, could derail Republicans' plans to pass the SAVE America Act, one of Trump's top priorities, tightening voting rules. Majority Leader John Thune intended to devote evening and night sessions this week to its consideration. A cascade of votes on the military operation could slow or even halt that process.
