Is there a threat of radiation leakage?
Experts assure that there is no radiation threat, but the incident emphasizes the risks associated with nuclear facilities amid Iran's war with Israel and the US.
Iran and Russia said the shell hit the territory of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, but without damage or radiological leaks. The incident occurred amid Iran's escalating conflict with Israel and the United States, drawing renewed attention to the safety of nuclear power facilities in the region, writes Associated Press.
According to Rosatom, the strike hit an area near the metrology building, no personnel were injured and the radiation background remains normal. About 480 Russian specialists are at the plant, and evacuation is being prepared if necessary.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran also reported no damage to the facility. The IAEA confirmed receipt of the information, but there is no independent confirmation of damage yet.
What is known about Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant
The Bushehr nuclear power plant, being built under a Russian design, runs on low-enriched uranium and produces about 1,000 MW of electricity. The expansion project involves adding two new reactors of 1,000 MW each.
The plant remained intact during the 12-day war in June and plays a minor role in Iran's power supply, but its possible damage poses a serious threat to regional security and the Persian Gulf water supply.
