It has become known where he is now.
The media has tracked the movement of a US landing ship that is heading to the Middle East right now. The USS Tripoli was spotted near Singapore.
According to CNN, maritime monitoring data made it possible to establish the ship's route even though there is limited publicity for such operations.
The ship was approaching waters near Singapore, located near the strategically important Strait of Malacca.
The route was traced using satellite data. Maritime surveillance platforms showed that the ship left Okinawa on March 11 and passed through the South China Sea. The ship's speed was about 40 kilometers per hour.
U.S. Marines
According to The Wall Street Journal, the ship is carrying a U.S. Marine unit of about 2,200 military personnel. The unit in question is the 31st Expeditionary Unit, which is based in Okinawa and specializes in rapid response.
The U.S. Central Command says about 50,000 U.S. troops are already in the Middle East amid the escalating situation with Iran.
The "mini aircraft carrier"
USS Tripoli is about 260 meters long and has a displacement of about 45,000 tons. It is capable of carrying F-35B Lightning II fighters, MV-22 Osprey convertible aircraft and landing boats for troop landings.
Officially the U.S. does not disclose where exactly the unit will be deployed and what tasks it will perform. It is only known that such forces are usually used for evacuations, amphibious operations and rapid crisis response.
Why the ship was tracked
Although military vessels often turn off their transponders, in areas with heavy shipping traffic - like Singapore - they are sometimes left active for navigational safety. This is what allowed the media to locate it.
Thanks to open maritime monitoring data, journalists were able to track the landing craft's movement into a potential escalation zone in virtually real time.
