The State Department telegram was signed personally by Marco Rubio.
The US has ordered diplomatic missions around the world to "immediately" assess security measures, due to the worsening situation in the Middle East. According to The Washington Post, the relevant State Department cable, signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, arrived Tuesday.
According to the order, "all diplomatic missions around the world" must convene emergency committees - multidisciplinary teams designed to identify threats and plan for them - and review their security.
Analogous orders have already been sent to diplomatic missions in the Middle East in recent weeks, but the order issued Tuesday was the first time such an order has been issued to all diplomatic missions around the world.
Since the war in Iran began on Feb. 28, several U.S. embassies have been attacked. Some missions have been temporarily closed and U.S. personnel have been ordered to leave many countries. And while most of the threats have focused on the U.S. presence in the Middle East, there have also been several incidents of violence elsewhere, including gunshots outside the U.S. Consulate in Toronto and an explosion outside the U.S. Embassy in Oslo.
According to State Department cables, militia groups in Iraq have carried out 292 attacks on U.S. facilities since Feb. 28. It noted that in some cases, groups of armed men have entered homes to obtain information on U.S. citizens.
In another incident over the weekend, an "intercepted, unexploded Iranian ballistic warhead" hit an apartment building housing U.S. diplomats in Israel. No injuries were reported, but the cable noted that the incident underscores the importance of seeking shelter when an alarm goes off.
