The pilot-in-training said what he could surprise Russia with.
In 2026, Ukraine will receive an updated SAMP/T NG SAM system, which should intercept ballistic missiles. This is very positive news. Especially against the backdrop of the situation with Patriot SAMs.
The AFU reserve colonel, flight instructor and military expert Roman Svitan told "24 Kanal" that now only American Patriot SAMs can intercept ballistic missiles. Ukraine also had in service the European SAMP/T SAM system, but it proved ineffective against such weapons. So it was being finalized.
How do ballistic missiles intercept?"
Svitan said that if we talk simplistically, virtually any missile could work against a ballistic missile. But there are a lot of questions about guidance. Not all anti-aircraft missile systems can calculate the flight path of a ballistic missile.
There are different approaches to destroying enemy air targets. An anti-missile can fly up to the target and radio detonate at the rendezvous point, after which a "cloud" of elements strikes the missile. The PAC-3 takes a different approach to the Patriot SAM. It actually crashes into the enemy missile, destroying it with kinetic energy.
- The old SAMP/T complexes could also intercept ballistics, but ineffectively. Now the French have refined their systems. They will be tested in the field in Ukraine to bring them to mass production. This is a wonderful approach," said Svitan.
The media reported earlier that the SAMP/T SAM, which was considered an analog of the Patriot, had problems intercepting ballistic missiles. The reason was software and insufficient number of Aster 30 missiles needed.
