Kiev is preparing to develop them with Romania.
Ukrainian energy company Naftohaz is in talks with Romania's OMV Petrom on a partnership to develop a significant offshore gas field in the Black Sea. This was written by Reuters on March 16, citing its own sources.
According to media reports, Naftogaz discovered "significant reserves" of gas in the Black Sea even before Russia's full-scale invasion. A Reuters interlocutor calls the field "one of the most promising in the Black Sea region," where Romania and Turkey are already developing their own deposits.
The publication's interlocutors also specify that negotiations with Romanian oil company OMV Petrom are at an early stage, and the actual development of the gas field will begin only after the war is over. In the meantime, the discovery of the field could strengthen Europe's energy security and emphasize the Black Sea's potential for new production, the article said.
Seismic surveys at the field near Romanian offshore acreage have been partially carried out and 3D and 2D data are already available, according to Reuters' sources. Ukraine plans to negotiate at both company and government levels to attract Western technology for deepwater gas production.
