The period of Laporta's leadership is considered the best in the history of the soccer club.
Joan Laporta will remain president of FC Barcelona. The 63-year-old lawyer was elected for another five-year term, according to the club's website. The team's players are Robert Lewandowski and Wojciech Szczęsny, while Eva Payor plays for the women's team, recalls TVP.
Laporta received 68.18% of the vote, while his rival Victor Font received 29.78%. About 42% of the club's 48,480 members participated in the voting.
This is Laporta's second consecutive victory over Font, who accepted the election results and conceded defeat.
"We are sad because we had high hopes. Congratulations to Laporta," Font told reporters.
Laporta, who has led the club since 2021 and before that from 2003 to 2010, will now officially return to the job, having resigned as president a month before the election in accordance with the bylaws.
Laporta's first period in charge is considered the best in the club's history. In 2009, under coach Josep Guardiola, Barcelona won the Spanish Cup and Lionel Messi was the team's star player.
In 2021, Laporta returned to the helm with a promise to keep the Argentine at the club but failed to deliver. Nevertheless, he helped Barcelona stay afloat despite significant financial problems inherited from his predecessors. In 2022, he was criticized for "creative accounting".
In 2022, he brought in Robert Lewandowski, with whom Barcelona won two Spanish league titles and returned to the top division of European soccer. In the fall of 2024, he brought back Wojciech Szczęsny, who played a key role in their second league title.
