The US president has issued an ultimatum to Iran.
US President Donald Trump has threatened new strikes on Iran's Kharg Island, which is a key center for Iranian oil exports. He said if Tehran tries to block the Strait of Hormuz, the US could launch new attacks.
The Reuters reported.
The US leader wrote that countries that receive oil through the strait should help secure it. He expressed hope that China, France, Japan, South Korea, Britain and other nations would send their warships there to guard the sea lanes.
Iran promises escalation
In response, Iran said it would step up its attacks after the US strikes on their facilities. According to media reports, Iranian forces have already launched missiles and drones, particularly at energy infrastructure in the region and US diplomatic facilities.
Attacks on energy facilities in the UAE and other US-linked targets have also been reported. Iran has called on civilians to leave areas associated with U.S. interests.
Why the Strait of Hormuz is important
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important sea lanes in the world:
it carries about 20 percent of the world's oil shipments and a significant portion of LNG,
it connects the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.
Any disruption to shipping in this area could significantly affect global energy markets and cause oil prices to rise.
